Seoul National University Hospital Hosts First Symposium on Public Sector Role of National University Hospitals
The Public Sector Division of Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) successfully hosted the ‘1st Symposium on the Public Sector Role of National University Hospitals’ on August 22nd.
The symposium brought together approximately 200 participants, including representatives from ten national university hospitals across the country, the National University Hospital Association, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Ministry of Education, local governments, and regional medical centers. They gathered to re-examine the public healthcare identity and role of national university hospitals and to lay the foundation for collaboration.
This symposium provided a meaningful platform for national university hospitals to collectively explore the direction they should take as regional hub public hospitals to address healthcare disparities, expand essential medical services, and strengthen public healthcare.

The Public Sector Division of Seoul National University Hospital announced that it held the ‘1st Symposium on the Public Sector Role of National University Hospitals’ on August 22nd.
The event was attended by approximately 200 people, including representatives from the public sector divisions of ten national university hospitals nationwide, the National University Hospital Association, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, local governments, and regional medical centers. It served as an opportunity to re-examine the public healthcare identity and role of national university hospitals and to build a foundation for cooperation.
The symposium began with a video message from Minister of Health and Welfare Jeong Eun-kyung, who stated, "We ask that national university hospitals take the lead in resolving regional disparities in healthcare, expanding essential medical services, and strengthening public healthcare as key pillars of public healthcare."
Session 1 addressed ‘The Role of National University Hospitals in Public Healthcare.’ Professor Yoon Seok-jun (Department of Preventive Medicine, Korea University College of Medicine) presented on ways to redefine the role of national university hospitals, emphasizing their role as hubs for regional integrated healthcare systems. He explained that this requires a structural shift towards hospitals specializing in severe, emergency, and rare diseases, strengthening cooperation networks between regional medical institutions, and support from the government's institutional framework.
Session 2, ‘The Way Forward for the Public Healthcare Regional Physician Support System,’ focused on medical personnel support measures, sharing policy suggestions to address regional healthcare disparities. Professor Kim Yun-seong of Kangwon National University Hospital introduced his experience participating in the ‘Project to Support Personnel Expenses for Medical Personnel Dispatched to Regional Hub Public Hospitals,’ suggesting ways to resolve the shortage of local medical personnel through settlement support, enhanced employment stability, and expanded research cooperation.
Following this, Professor Lee Eung-jun of Seoul National University Hospital shared the achievements of increasing medical accessibility in the region by participating in the ‘Public Clinical Professor System Pilot Project,’ and stated that practical support for education and research activities is needed to regularize the project. Finally, Professor Chung Eun-joo of Seoul National University Hospital emphasized that national university hospitals should demonstrate integrated leadership in education, personnel support, policy, technology, and research to secure local medical personnel.
In addition, experts from various fields discussed the sustainable public healthcare functions and implementation strategies of national university hospitals from various perspectives in a comprehensive discussion.
This symposium served as an opportunity to re-establish the identity of national university hospitals as key players in national healthcare and is significant in that it explored the feasibility of a regional integrated healthcare system centered on regional physician support systems.
Moon Jin-soo, Vice President of the Public Sector at Seoul National University Hospital, said, “This was the first official symposium co-hosted by the National University Hospital Association and the public sector divisions of national university hospitals across the country, and it was a meaningful event where the government, national university hospitals, and regional hub public hospitals gathered to discuss the direction of public healthcare development in Korea.” He added, “The Public Sector Division of Seoul National University Hospital will continue to build practical cooperative relationships between related organizations and fulfill its responsibility to strengthen public healthcare.”
