Let's discuss facelift surgery at Gangnam Station Plastic Surgery.

Hello, I'm Dr. Lee Kyung-min.

As we age, our skin naturally loses elasticity.

Even with consistent skincare efforts,

there comes a point where we reach a limit.

When the facial contours sag, expressions become blurred,

and it's easy to give off a tired and aged impression.

In such cases, many consider a facelift to improve their appearance.

What is a Facelift?

Unlike methods that only tighten the skin surface for temporary improvement, a facelift is a surgical procedure that addresses the deep fascial layers and structures of the face.

The face has band-like tissues called retaining ligaments,

which firmly connect the skin to the bone.

When these retaining ligaments lose their elasticity,

the entire facial contour descends.

Therefore, simply pulling the skin has its limits. To achieve natural-looking results,

the fundamental cause of sagging must be addressed through retaining ligament release and SMAS layer dissection.

The Importance of Retaining Ligaments and the SMAS Layer

Many people don't experience the full benefits of a facelift because

retaining ligament release and SMAS layer dissection are insufficient.

Retaining ligaments are key structures that support the facial skin,

and failure to release them can limit the lifting effect.

Furthermore, extensive dissection of the SMAS layer (the fibromuscular layer) is necessary

to sharpen the facial contours.

This can also improve nasolabial folds, jowls, and double chins.

Facelift Surgical Procedure

During a facelift, an incision is made near the sideburns

and extends towards the front of the ear.

The skin is then dissected to expose the SMAS layer.

The SMAS layer is then secured to a firm structure,

and excess skin is excised and sutured.

By lifting and securing each layer in this way, the fascia and skin are lifted sequentially,

resulting in improved elasticity and long-lasting results.

Swelling and bruising may occur immediately after surgery,

but you can gradually regain a natural-looking facial contour over time.

When is a Facelift Necessary?

A facelift may be considered when previous lifting treatments have had minimal effect, or when the skin is thin and severely sagging,

making laser lifting alone insufficient.

It can also be a good option for those whose facial elasticity has decreased overall, resulting in a blurred facial outline,

or for those who have deep wrinkles that give them a tired and aged appearance.

Post-operative Care and Considerations

High-pressure oxygen therapy is one of the post-operative care programs.

It is best to consume soft foods for a few days after surgery, as there may be swelling and bruising.

It is also recommended to refrain from opening your mouth wide or making excessive facial expressions for about 4 weeks.

Sleep on your back for about a month,

and avoid smoking, alcohol, saunas, strenuous exercise, and vigorous massage, as these can slow down recovery.

Most importantly,

it should be performed under the plan of a medical professional with experience and know-how.

A facelift is more than just a cosmetic procedure;

it is a surgery that corrects structural changes in the face. Therefore,

it is important to carefully assess individual skin thickness, elasticity, and fascial structure before proceeding

to achieve the desired results.
